Bentworth Community,
I hope this message finds you well.
Looking ahead to next week’s weather forecast, it appears that the primary concern may be extreme cold weather rather than poor road conditions. If this holds true, we may need to consider a delay or even a cancellation due to extreme temperatures.
If after reading the following information you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out so I may provide additional clarification.
Please see the protocol below for "cold weather" flexible instruction days. We are also working to develop a protocol for remote learning days due to poor road conditions.
The goal of following these protocols is to provide a meaningful learning experience for all of our students.
Thank you,
Protocol for Cold Weather Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs)
Purpose: Cold Weather Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs) are designed to ensure continuity of learning during weather related events. Specifically, this protocol will be implemented during Cold Weather Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs) when the majority of roads are SAFE to travel.
It will be the parents’ choice as to what type of instruction they would like their child to participate in on a Cold Weather Flexible Instruction Day. (in-person or online)
There are two options on a COLD WEATHER FLEXIBLE INSTRUCTION DAY:
1. Your child may attend their school as they would typically do on any other day.
a. Teachers will be at school
b. Buses will run on their regular schedule to transport students
c. Car riders may continue as a typical day
d. Students will follow their normal schedule
e. Breakfast and lunch will be served
-------------------------------- OR -------------------------------------
2. Your child may remain home
a. Students who do not attend in person will log into their Google Classroom to access assignments and complete their lessons virtually.
b. Your child’s assignments will be posted on the teacher's google classroom by 10:00 AM.
c. Students will demonstrate attendance by submitting completed assignments within two school days of the cold weather FID.
d. Grading: assignments will be graded in accordance with standard grading policies.
e. Teacher Availability: Teachers can be reached via email or other methods identified by the individual teacher during their planning time.

3. Exceptions:
a. Students facing extenuating circumstances (e.g., illness, lack of internet access) will have the opportunity to make up work without penalty.

4. Notification:
a. Parents, guardians, and staff will be notified of a cold weather FID by 6:00 AM on the day of implementation OR earlier via district-wide communication phone calls.
b. The announcement will also be posted on the district Facebook, WPXI and WJPA.
Conclusion: COLD WEATHER Flexible Instruction Days are a valuable tool to ensure uninterrupted learning.
By following this protocol, the district aims to provide an equitable, accessible, and effective educational experience for all students, while providing parents with a choice. In addition, this protocol will provide all students attending in person with breakfast and lunch.
